depth

The depth of something such as a hole is the distance between its top and bottom.

英語を母国語話者と同じように、言葉の順番通りに読むという『英英辞書で読む一語一語』。

今回は「深さ」を意味するdepth。

この『英英辞書で読む一語一語』に慣れていると、

くらいならもう問題ないかもしれない。

分析すると

The depth of somethingの時点でもう日本語と順番が違う。

日本語では「穴のような何かの深さ」という訳になり、見事に順序が反対になっている。

The depth of something such as a holeをThatにして、次に進む。

That is the distance

で、「それはその距離のことだ」ということで、順番に読んでもわかりやすい。

そして、この文章はここを核にして成り立っている。

「その距離のことだ。上面から底の間の」

という順番で読む。

distanceの前にtheがあって、topの前にitsがあるので、日本語より効率は悪い。

日本語なら、「それはその上面から底の間の距離のことだ」で済む。

でも結局は、英語のこの順番はいろいろな場面で使える。

「深さ　of　何か 穴のような　だ　 その距離　上から底までの」と日本語にすると変な順番。

英語ではいたって普通だ。
