ハーレーダビッドソンの動画で英語を勉強する。
ハーレーダビッドソンが新型ナイトスターを紹介する英語を読み解くと、いろいろなコツが見えてきました。前半部分の会話から英語圏特有の話し方について見てみましょう。
動画では、開発陣3人がナイトスターを囲んで話し合っています。
With any Harley Davidson, the engine is the heart of the motorcycle,
どのハーレーも、そのエンジンはバイクの心臓だ。
Withからはじめるという話し方です。このあとも続きます。
and with Revolution Max, Pan America and with Nightster, we’ve taken that really literally.
そして、レボリューションマックス（新型エンジン）とパン・アメリカ（新型車）、ナイトスターについて、私たちは本当にそれを文字通りに捉えている。
We started with the engine, the frames bolt to the front, subframes bolt to the back,
and that’s what creates the motorcycle.

英語ではall that~で、「のすべて」という言い方をしたいときに使います。
これは、thatを関係代名詞として捉える場合で、「技術のすべて」という訳になります。
また、 that comes along with
は、「ついてくる」「進む」「はかどる」という意味です。

という言い方を実際の英会話で出来るでしょうか？
thatを使った関係代名詞、withのあとにbeingを使った受け身。文法解釈的には中級でも、実際に使うとなると高難度です。

新ナイトスターの重量は485パウンドです。
ハーレーはアメリカなので、485をフォー・ハンドレッド・エイティー・ファイブと、ハンドレッドを訳さずに言っています。ブリティッシュでは必ず、ハンドレッド・エンド～となります。
You know, that’s nearly an 80-pound reduction over Sportsters of today.
それは新スポーツスターに対して80パウンドもの削減になっています。
Pull it up off the kickstand, you’ll feel how light this is.

Those two come together and they really make for a rocketship of a motorcycle once you throw your leg over this.

And one of the biggest challenges with Nightster was trying to cram this beast of an engine and fitting that into something that’s recognizably Sportster, that has that iconic silhouette and that millions of people around the world are familiar with and know and love.
また、ナイトスターの大きな挑戦の一つは、野獣のようなエンジンとアイコニックなシルエットで世界中の人がよく知り、愛するスポーツスターとして明らかな何かにフィットさせ、詰め込むというものです。

And then in the end, the dual outboard shocks and the architecture of the motorcycle allowed a really radical solution to put the fuel underneath the seat.

And that frees up the area that would traditionally be the fuel tank up here to become only air box and it allowed us to get this into the size of the old Sportster fuel tank.

That frees up は～を自由にする。で、the areaをフリーにします。
エリアは、伝統的にタンクがあった場所のことです。
最後の

は、「エアボックスのみにすることで」となります。
There are other benefits that we get from that, too.
そこから得る恩恵はまだある。
When we move the fuel tank underneath the seat here, the center of gravity of the bike stays low, which actually helps to make this bike feel even lighter and more maneuverable.
シートの下に移動したことで、重心を低くステイさせることができて、より軽く、機動性を感じることができるようになったからだ。
ここのwhichの使い方は、 the center of gravity of the bike stays low, をひとまとめにしています。
「バイクの重心を低く保つ」ことが、実際に○○を助ける。という文になります。
何かを言ったあとに、whichを主語にして繋げることができるかどうかです。
以上ですが、自分が普段使っている英語と比べていかがだったでしょうか。普段なら分けて、もっとわかりやすくいいそうなところを、ネイティブは特有の表現で話していることがわかると思います。
